Jessica “jem” Johnsen

Lead Artist and Owner of Upstate Henna, LLC.

Born in Ohio but deeply rooted in South Carolina, Jem has been a passionate advocate for all-natural henna since 2017, officially launching Upstate Henna in 2019. Her journey through the arts began in high school, where she explored ceramics and photography, eventually leading to her studies in Art & Color Theory at Midlands Technical College. Expanding her creative and academic horizons, Jem delved into Sustainable Agriculture at Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College before immersing herself in Plant & Environmental Sciences at Clemson University.

Jem’s commitment to her craft extends beyond her personal artistry. She has attended a number of prestigious henna conferences, including two years at the East Coast Henna Fest, three years with the Spring Fling Conference, and has actively contributed to The Henna Society for three years. These experiences have not only shaped her skills but deepened her bond with the global henna community.

Now residing in Spartanburg, SC, Jem continues to evolve her art while enjoying time with her cherished family and beloved dogs.
